Chandigarh International Airport will remain closed for five hours daily till September 18, 2021. The airport, however, said that no civil flight operations would be affected due to the shutdown.

Airport remains closed for five hours every day due to maintenance work on the runway and installation of runway lighting system.

According to the airport's chief executive officer Ajay Bhardwaj, the airport is currently closed from 11 pm to 4:30 am.

Bhardwaj said in a statement, "Runway closure has been sought by the air force for installation of lights on the runway and annual maintenance. Work is already going on and we hope that the new powerful lighting system will be made functional by September 18, 2021."

He also said that the last flight arrives from Bengaluru at 10:05 pm, and then departs for Bengaluru at 7:15 am. There are no scheduled flights during off hours. A total of 32 flights operate at the airport.

Work was also done on the length of the airport's runway, as it was extended back in 2018. At that time, the airport was closed from 12 February to 16 February, and there were no flights operating during that time.

The latest closure will make the runway suitable for wide-bodied aircraft. There has been a high demand for international flights to Europe, Canada, UK, USA and other countries. With a remodeled runway, that would be a possibility.
