This ban was announced recently after 3 travellers on a flight coming from Seoul, South Korea, were found to be infected with Omicron virus.
Hong Kong Govt issues a official notification on this suspension, "Passenger flights from these countries will not be allowed to land in Hong Kong and individuals who have stayed in those countries are not allowed to board flights to Hong Kong, including transit flights."
According to records, Hong Kong remained virus-free for most of 2021 and Premier Carrie Lam said in an announcement that the restrictions were necessary to contain the outbreak and also to protect our population from this deadly virus.
