The Government of India is all set to introduce a whole new passport system for its nationals. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the government will launch chip-enabled e-passports that will be secured with biometric data.
While this new e-passport will help travelers move easily through immigration posts across the world, and it is currently in the second phase of the Passport Seva program developed by Tata Consultancy Services. The first phase took a decade of work.
According to Sanjay Bhattacharya, Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, e-passports will secure biometric data, and will also be in line with International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
India has already issued around 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports, which are fitted with an electronic microprocessor chip. This is all a part of a pilot project before the final project starts.
The country issues passports to citizens in printed booklets. Incidentally, India ranks 83rd in the list of most powerful passports in 2022. India managed to improve its ranking from the last 90th position, while Japan and Singapore top the list.
The new passport will revolutionize technology as no one needs to check in and stand in long queues at airports.
