Thailand plans to levy an entry fee of 300 baht ($9 or ₹665) from foreign tourists visiting the country from April 2022 as in the wake to revive the tourism industry which was badly hitted by the coronavirus pendamic.
The tourist entry fee comes as a part of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' promotional plan for 2022, with the theme "Amazing Thailand New Chapter". This fee will help with the development of local tourist attractions and an insurance program for visitors.
Tourist entry fee will be added to air ticket prices from April, while the mode of recovery from land-entering tourists is yet to be determined.
The entry fee scheme comes as the Southeast Asian nation attempts to prepare courses for its tourism sector in the aftermath of the pandemic. The country has been experimenting with various plans to revive its travel industry with limited success.
Suthipong Phuenphipop, vice-chairman of Thailand's Tourism Council, said the entry fee has been in the news for a long time, with its implementation delayed by Covid.
He said this levy is similar to what many other countries levy on tourists, and the benefits from this initiative would be much higher than the nominal fee.
