In view of this, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a global increase in novel coronavirus cases, despite fewer tests and a decline in infections for several weeks.
WHO said cases are increasing, especially in parts of Asia, urging caution to increase vaccination coverage and lifting epidemic response measures, Xinhua news agency reported.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference that despite fewer tests, cases are increasing rapidly globally. He said continued local outbreaks and escalation are to be expected, especially in areas where measures to prevent transmission have been lifted.
According to WHO's Corronavirus technical chief Maria van Kerkhove, more than 11 million cases have been reported in the past week. This is an increase of eight percent over the previous week.
She said that one factor contributing to the rising cases is the Omicron variant, which is the fastest spreading coronavirus variant ever. Another contributing factor is the removal of health measures such as masks, physical distancing and movement restrictions in some countries.
