Indian government is planning to issue e-passports to its citizens from 2022-23. This remarks came while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha on the government's plan to issue e-passports in the calendar year 2022 and its details.

Mentioning this, the MoS elaborated that the e-passport would be a combined paper and electronic passport, which would come with an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna embedded in the back cover as an inlay.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs (MoS) V Muraleedharan said important passport information would be stored in the chip, and also printed on its data page. Muraleedharan said the characteristics of the chip and the document are specified in International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) document 9303.

He further said that the Ministry of External Affairs has entrusted the National Informatics Center (NIC) with technical responsibilities regarding issuance of e-passports.

The e-passport will be manufactured by India Security Press, Nashik, which has issued a letter of intent for the purchase of 4.5 crore ICAO-compliant electronic chips along with its operating system.

The MoS further informed the Upper House that the sample e-passports are currently under trial, while the full-scale manufacturing and issuance would begin with the completion of the technical infrastructure and eco-system.
