Heavy snowfall lashed the Kashmir Valley yesterday morning, cutting it off from the outside world, canceling all flights to and from the Srinagar airport, and closing the national highway.

There was heavy snowfall in the valley, while it rained in Jammu division yesterday. According to the Meteorological Department, adverse weather will continue in the valley during the next 12 hours. Although the weather is likely to remain unfavorable during the next 12 hours, slight improvement may be seen from Monday evening.

Srinagar city had accumulated 5 inches of snow till Monday morning, while other popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and other higher reaches received more than 1-3 feet of fresh snow.

These weather conditions have reduced visibility, affecting flight operations at the Srinagar International Airport, and no flight could take off or land at the airport during the morning hours.

Jammu-Srinagar highway has also been closed in the Ramban-Banihal section of the road due to mudslides and stone pelting at several places. The highway serves as the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley, and is also the main road link that connects the valley to the rest of the country.
